On Thursday 14th January 2021 we hosted our first official get together for our new Celebrating Communities project. If the word hasn’t spread to you yet, we have a whole other blog post giving great examples of what the project is all about and where the inspiration came from: https://dfel.org.uk/blog/celebrating-communities-friendship-hope-fun/
Our aim for the first meeting was to get interested folks in a room together (virtually of course) to see where the conversation would take us, and what connections we could make. You can watch the full conversation here:
A brilliant 39 people from all over joined the conversation and we know around another 10 people are keen to be involved but were unable to join us this time. We all said our hellos, and immediately there were some strong connections and links within the group where people had projects or interests in common (golf, dogs, gardening, singing and more!) Some links that were shared in the chat alongside hellos:

We then broke out and talked in small groups, sharing ideas and projects that inspired us and what we think needs to happen next. We kept the topic as open for interpretation and then brought those conversations together and compared notes. Here are some of the ideas and thoughts that came up.
We extracted some key themes:
– Staying connected – keeping & building relationships
– Sharing: knowledge / learning / experiences – centralizing info
– Building on learning
– Identifying structure / mapping
– Digital inclusion & exclusion
– Social isolation
– Opportunities for getting out and about
– Blended worlds – digital & real
Our next conversation will build on these ideas, and discuss what needs to be done to put the ideas into action.
When we next meet again…
We took a show of hands to see that people wanted to continue the conversation, and the best way we could make that happen. It was decided that we’ll have a fortnightly Thursday morning drop in on Zoom, and we will be looking at sessions at other times for those who can’t make that. We will also be looking at other ways to get involved for those who can’t or don’t like to Zoom. No commitments required, there are only opportunities.
The second conversation will be on Thursday January 28th 10.30 am on Zoom. Everyone is welcome. If anyone wants to suggest or even better offer (!) a topic/theme/workshop for 28/1 or anything else you think folks will be interested in, please let us know. We will share a loose agenda in advance to all registered participants and people can add to this.
Register in advance for this meeting:
Getting to know each other a bit better
We’ve done a very short Survey Monkey to find out what we each bring to and what we’d like to get out of our collaborations, plus a chance to share website and social media contacts. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NP5WTKM
If you would like to find out more, get involved, or have your say on anything we would love to hear from you!
